For millennia the kraken has slept, imprisoned deep below the waves of the Aechetian Ocean. Imprisoned, but now released. And with the ancient being's awakening comes a storm unlike any other. The city of Soften lies at the edge of the Miriai Empire, looming over the ocean tides. Within the city, people prepare for the storm. For Versas, an Opal Guard of the city, this means drinking and gambling her night away. But when the kraken attacks, Versas knows she has to defend her home.

Along with a serving girl named Ember and bard called Stills, Versas takes a stand against the primordial beast. But the three do not understand the magnitude of the kraken's attack, or the madness it brings. As the night passes they struggle to retain their lives, their honour, and their very souls, hoping that by morning something still survives.
